DEW's slogan, Safety is always within our "Site", represents our commitment to fully integrate safety into our construction programs. For our customers, it means that a comprehensive risk assessment and coordinated safety action plan are in place before and during the construction process. For our employees and other trade workers, it means that potential safety and health exposures have been identified and subsequently reduced to provide a workplace free of predictable hazards.
Some of the mechanisms we use are the DEW Estimating Risk Assessment Checklist and the DEW Site Specific Safety Action Plan.
The DEW Estimating Risk Assessment Checklist is a pre-bid mechanism to identify Existing Hazards/Exposures (contaminated soil, overhead power lines, security issues, for examples) and Construction Hazards/Exposures (trenching, confined space, fall exposures, for examples). The identification of the hazards and exposures that exist before work begins, and will be present during the work, provide a proactive mechanism for the DEW project team to develop a plan and budget for the safety considerations particular to that project.
The DEW Site Specific Safety Action Plan is the actual instrument that is used to guide the safe execution of the construction project. The Plan identifies the safety/health exposures for the construction activities and specifies the corrective actions that will be taken to reduce and eliminate these exposures. The Plan requires all DEW employees and other trade workers affected by the hazards/exposures to read and sign the Plan. Further, a Job Safety Checklist is completed weekly to cross reference OSHA regulations.
