Sixty Five Percent and More

Doug Robie by Doug Robie

DEW is an Environmental Partner with Vermont’s Small Business Administration.  Annually we must calculate our consumption of environmentally friendly goods and provide data on what we did with our waste.

2011 Main Office Data (includes adjoining businesses):  Total waste was 16.77 tons.  7.02 tons were recycled and 3.9 tons were composted, representing a 65% diversion rate.  Simply put; 1/3 of all our waste went to a landfill and 2/3 did not.  Additionally, Office Manager Janelle Leduc prioritizes purchases of green (green seal) and recycled products.

2011 Project Data:  DEW projects track their waste data and here are a figures for a few projects.

  • Boltwood Place Apts (demo and new construction):  60% recycled/diverted
  • Jay Peak Hotel Jay & Waterpark (new construction):  18% recycled/diverted
  • Castleton Facility Barn (new construction): 31% recycled/Diverted
  • Castleton New 2012 Hall (new construction): 48% recycled/diverted
  • Malone Border Station (new construction): 75% recycled/diverted
  • Bennington State Office Complex (demo and new construction): 87% recycled/diverted

Certainly, DEW is doing its part to keep waste out of landfills.  There are two landfills in Vermont and the Moretown facility is close to capacity.  When these fill, trash might have to go out of state which would represent a cost increase to all citizens.

DEW Awards 2011 Safety Merit Award to Kal-Vin Employee

Doug Robie by Doug Robie

DEW’s SHARP (Safety, Health and Resource Protection) Team developed the Safety Merit Award to recognize an individual or company who understands the importance of safety on our job sites. We are pleased to announce that Dolor Smith with our subcontractor Kal-Vin at Jay Peak is this year’s recipient.

Dolor was nominated by DEW Superintendent Dave Lothian. “Dolor is Kal-Vin’s safety coordinator here at Jay. Without his help over the past 12 months I do not believe our overall safety performance would be as good. He has always been very quick to respond to safety issues and always followed up on any discipline that was needed.”

Ben Spaulding, DEW’s Safety Coordinator at Jay Peak worked closely with Dolor and confirmed that he was an essential component in the overall safety excellence at Jay Peak.

Dolor, a devoted father of three children, lives in Auburn, Maine and made the weekly 175 mile trek to Jay Peak in all weather conditions.

The SHARP Team has added Dolor’s name to the Merit Award plaque and he has received $100 cash.

Fred Kilar – DEW’s 2011 Safety Superintendent of Year

Doug Robie by Doug Robie

Superintendent Fred Kilar is DEW’s  2011 Safety Superintendent of the Year.  Many of you have not met Fred as his workload has primarily been in New Hampshire. He’s been with DEW for a few years and has distinguished himself when it comes to safety excellence. He was nominated by Rick Davis and Gordon Newman.

I feel that in the few years that Fred has been with DEW, he has taken a lot of time to catch up with the DEW ways of safety.” - Gordon

He’s been with DEW two years plus. I have worked with him for three weeks and he is spot on in everything related to safety – unbelievably safety oriented. I’ve learned a few things I didn’t know about safety in three weeks.” –  Rick

Let’s discuss Fred’s ‘trial by fire’. After completing the Advance Transit project, Fred took on the Cleveland-Rudman project in Concord. It was located in a government building and one of the occupants is Federal OSHA. Basically, OSHA was in and around Fred’s job every day. He got us through this project scot-free. Not only that but the government’s contracting officer, Donna Maffeo wrote this in her performance evaluation of the project.

On site coordination was superior due in large part to DEW providing s highly experienced super that maintained very diligent records and fastidiously reemphasized safety and tenant satisfaction. DEW even took proactive steps of contacting OSHA directly to verify their plans met with recent guidance changes. Not a single professional conduct complaint was received despite having a crew of 30+ electricians, 8 pipefitters, 4 control contractors, paving crews, surveyors and numerous specialties working in occupied areas. The professional conduct of the crew is a direct reflection on the superintendent’s morning safety/quality/ conduct meetings.”

Thus, high marks from DEW employees and from a client support the SHARP Team’s selection.

Fred lives in New London, NH with his wife Linda and children Geoffrey and Jennifer.

Fred was presented with a commemorative DEW jacket, $100 cash and his name has been added to our Safety Superintendent of the Year plaque.
